Film Evenings at the Slovanska Library: The Promised Land

The film is set in the city of Łódź in Poland. Three young friends, Karol, Maks, and Moryc, representing the Polish, German, and Jewish communities, decide to start a business in pursuit of wealth. Their journey, fraught with obstacles and moral compromises, is at the same time a critical portrayal of wild capitalism and its impact on individuals and society. Directed by Andrzej Wajda, 1974; 138 minutes.

The film by Polish director Andrzej Wajda, winner of an Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Nobel Prize winner Wł. St. Reymont. Translation and introductory presentation of the film: students of the Department of Slavistics, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. The screening is part of the Film Evenings at the Slovanska Library 2025 series of events.
