The English Book Club: Hideous Kinky

The semi-autobiographical novel Hideous Kinky by Esther Freud, daughter of the British painter Lucian Freud and great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud, is a vivid and evocative coming-of-age story. The novel follows two sisters and their free-spirited mother, as they leave conventional life in England behind in search of spiritual enlightenment and personal freedom. Set largely in Morocco during the hippie happening of the 1960s, the novel is narrated through the eyes of one of the daughters, five-year-old Lucia. As their mother delves deeper into Sufism in pursuit of spiritual awakening and personal meaning, the girls’ yearning for stability grows stronger.
