The English Book Club: Joe Gould’s Secret

Charming, filthy, thieving and maybe a genius, Joe Gould was all that and much more. Born into old money and educated at Harvard, he later became a typical Greenwich Village bohemian and also a legend to many native New Yorkers from the middle of the twentieth century, Professor Seagull, as he was lovingly known, and the perfect subject matter for master storyteller Joseph Mitchell. Well-known for his depictions of the city’s simple, downtrodden people, Mitchell opens a door to an almost forgotten part of old New York and one of its eternal misfits. Let us walk through it and discover the secret of Joe Gould.
