Small Boat

Small Boat, a short novel, essay, a reflection on highly topical issues. The content is based on a true story, the journey of a boat carrying 29 refugees traveling from France to Great Britain. When they got into trouble, they called the emergency call center. They did not receive help because they were in British waters and therefore under British jurisdiction. Twenty-seven of them died. The woman who took the call is harshly condemned. The book consists of three parts. In the first and third parts, the accused woman presents her side of the story. She questions collective and individual responsibility. How easily an individual can become a monster, an inhuman being, while people are no longer sensitive to horrific scenes. The second part depicts the events of that fateful night from the perspective of the refugees. Small Boat, nominated for the International Booker Prize, is a provocative work of fiction that constantly views the real situation from a distance. It assesses humanity, and every reader will be able to search their own conscience, beliefs, and actions while reading. Not only about the refugee crisis, but about all inhumane acts around the world. (EZ)
