Read. For Real

DURATION
2025–2027

OBJECTIVES
Promoting reading and reading culture; discovering the diversity of European literature; connecting readers with authors, illustrators and translators; and encouraging shared reading.

TARGET GROUP
Anyone interested in promoting reading. The project is also aimed at kindergartens, schools, libraries, bookshops, cultural institutions and other organisations involved in organising literary and reading activities.

DESCRIPTION
Ljubljana City Library is participating in the European project Read. For Real , which celebrates European Authors’ Day and promotes reading and the discovery of the diversity of European literature among children and young people. In Slovenia, the project is coordinated by the Pionirska – Centre for Youth Literature and Librarianship v Mestni knjižnici Ljubljana, which serves as the national contact point.

The central idea of the project is simple: reading should be a natural part of everyday life – for real. The project promotes different forms of reading activities and enables each participating organisation to develop a programme adapted to its local context, audiences and capacities.

Supported by the Creative Europe programme, the project is open to everyone who wishes to contribute to the celebration of reading through their activities. Kindergartens, schools, libraries, bookshops, cultural institutions and other organisations can take part. They can organise new or existing literary and reading activities, such as visits by authors and illustrators, storytime sessions, read-alouds, book discussions and other activities that encourage reading.

Activities within the project

Participating organisations can organise a variety of literary and reading activities, including:

  • meetings with authors, illustrators and translators,
  • read-alouds and shared reading sessions,
  • storytime sessions,
  • discussions about books and literature,
