And the mountains echoed

In 1952, a father, Saboor, travels with his two children, three-year-old Pari and ten-year-old Abdullah, from the Afghan village of Shadbagh across the desert to Kabul. When Pari was born, their mother died. They get a stepmother and become very attached to each other. The family is going through a difficult time. Winters are particularly hard. During one of them, the family’s baby dies. The father, Saboor, tells a story of sacrifice before giving away little Pari to a rich family in Kabul for foster care. The siblings’ lives diverge and it will be a long time before they are reunited. The book features many characters, each with their own story to tell. (RN)
