The frame of this monumental Croatian novel represents a group of former high school classmates who, almost 50 years later, embark on a repeat of their prom trip, sailing from Opatija to Zadar. The story of the journey, interwoven with a recapitulation of their lives, is narrated by the central character, gynaecologist Tihomir Romar. While growing up in his native Zagreb, he met characters who, decades later, would together shape their lives and have a profound influence on each other. Romar’s life story flows like a torrent of reflections and events, with surprising twists and turns, interpretations and quite original views on the eternal themes of friendship, love, sex, coping with ageing and other life issues.
