The vegetarian

When Yeong-hye one day throws out all the meat from the refrigerator and announces that from now on she is a vegetarian, the customs of her marriage start to crumble. Things escalate at a family lunch when her father forcefully shoves a piece of meat in her mouth. Yeong-hye picks up a knife, cuts her wrist, and ends up in a hospital. From that event on we can observe a gradual decay of her family and the nonefficiency of institutions Yeong-hye is subjected to.  Han Kang received the Booker prize (2016) for her first novel translated into English.
